The University of Colorado at Boulder, a.k.a The U.S. Institute for Marijuana Studies, spent over $100K this year to prevent what Gawker called “a massive annual group pot party” on school grounds.
School officials closed off the campus to anyone who isn’t a student because they wanted to emphasize “the academic mission of the institution.”
The “4/20 smoke-out” is a sacred tradition at CU, which is consistently ranked as one of the top party schools in the nation. Though marijuana is legal in Colorado, it’s still against the law to smoke in public and possess large quantities of weed.
This party violates these rules, with 10,000 people expected to attend.
The $100K was primarily used to pay police officers, a change in strategy from 2012 when the school just put fish fertilizer on the grass of one of the school’s quads to ward off trespassers.
