Back in 1991, the University of Michigan started a brash squad of freshmen, whose impact on basketball and popular culture is still felt today. In the words of Nike design legend Tinker Hatfield, “If you were watching College Basketball in the early ’90s, the Fab Five stuck with you. They brought a new style of play. They had swagger to their game that I hadn’t seen at the college level before.” Hatfield pays homage to Chris Webber, Jalen Rose, Juwan Howard, Jimmy King and Ray Jackson with a special-edition Air Jordan 5. “I wanted to create a special shoe that celebrated that team and marks the start of a new era for the teams at the Jordan Brand and the University of Michigan,” says Hatfield.

The iconic Jordan 5 silhouette is transformed with a suede Maize upper, accented with classic Michigan references, including “M” embroidery on the all-black tongue, as well as “Hail To” and “The Victors” stitched on the inside of the left and right tongues, respectively. The team’s “Five Times” sign, depicted through a specially created logo inscribed on the heel, rounds out the details.

The Air Jordan 5 “Fab Five” will be gifted to friends and family of Jordan Brand and will not be available at retail.
