Apple sold more than five million iPhone 5’s in the device’s first weekend of availability, a record-breaking number that analysts believe would have been larger if it weren’t for supply constraints.

Chief Executive Tim Cook announced in a statement on Monday that the company has sold out of its initial inventory, although most customers who pre-ordered have had their devices shipped already.

“Demand for iPhone 5 has been incredible, and we are working hard to get an iPhone 5 into the hands of every customer who wants one as quickly as possible,” Mr. Cook said.
