black doctor

It’s awesome when we can celebrate accomplishments like these, a young African American doctor opening a stand alone ER in Houston, Texas.

Via PopMom, the 31 year old mom, Dr. Foyekemi Ikyaator, use to get just as agitated as the patient. Having to explain wait times and seeing patients in pain, isn’t the most ideal, even for the busiest of doctors. So with the support of a great circle, this doctor decided she would be a part of the solution instead of a growing problem.

“When you go to a regular hospital you check in and are essentially given a number. The doctor sees you, orders tests and then they go to the lab and you wait for the results to come back. The whole hospital is using the same lab and the same testing equipment, and the system gets clogged so there is a wait. We are a freestanding ER, which means that we’re not located in a hospital. But we have everything needed to provide the same level of care.”

“So a patient who might have to wait an hour to get a C-T scan at a regular hospital, and even longer to get the results, can get tested and the results back in 10 minutes.”

What makes this even better? If you need care that goes beyond Dr. Ikyaator’s capabilities, they coordinate with other hospitals to make sure you are a priority by your arrival.

Granted there are many standalone ER’s, but it’s always great to recognize young African American women who are making the difference. Women who defy stereotypes and become great community leaders. What Dr. Ikyaator has done says more as not only a mother or wife, but as a strong woman who is able to accomplish anything she sets her mind to.
