Former South African President Nelson Mandela, who has been hospitalized for about three weeks, has now been placed on life support.

The South African president’s office reported Mandela’s condition has worsened in the last 24 hours, while Mandela’s medical team makes strong efforts to keep the 94-year-old alive.

“The doctors are doing everything possible to get his condition to improve and are ensuring that Madiba is well-looked after and is comfortable. He is in good hands,” President Jacob Zuma said in a written statement, referring to Mandela’s tribal name.

Mandela has had various health issues over the past couple of years, including a lung infection and pneumonia in late March of this year.
