Defense Secretary Leon Panetta announced on Wednesday that the ban on women serving on the front lines of combat in the military has been lifted.

The ban was set in place in 1994, and prevented women from fighting in small ground combat units.

The decision came at the request of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the various branches of military will have until 2016 to determine whether any posts should remain off-limits for women.

While some are championing this decision as a win for equal rights, others claim it is a distraction from the real issue, which remains to be equal pay in the workplace.
