This quaint and stylish house, located in a small clearing in Wisconsin’s Door County, has an unassuming and muted silhouette. This is due to the restrained palette along the building’s charred cedar exterior, which has been installed over strips of varying depths. The result is a look that echoes both an undulating, pleated curtain and the varying depth found on tree bark. The black cedar is complemented by the rich hues of varnished cedar, dark aluminum and huge panels of glass. A small forecourt leads to a long concrete bench that affords a view of the house’s lush sylvan surroundings.

For a bit of contrast, check out the Mercedes House in Argentina that utilizes colder, more architecturally calculated designs.
