A 38-year-old man who could no longer take his girlfriend’s need to buy more stuff took his own life by leaping from a seventh floor balcony at the mall where the couple were shopping.
The man, identified as Tao Hsiao, had been with his girlfriend picking out Christmas presents at the Golden Eagle International Shopping Center in Xuzhou, China. The couple had already been inside the mall for five hours when the girlfriend insisted on checking out one last shoe store. The demand apparently pushed Tao over the edge.
“He told her she already had enough shoes, more shoes that she could wear in a lifetime and it was pointless buying any more,” an eyewitness was quoted as saying. “She started shouting at him accusing him of being a skinflint and of spoiling Christmas, it was a really heated argument.”
Mall security footage shows Tao throw his shopping bags over the railing before jumping onto the cosmetics section below.
A spokesman for the mall says no bystanders were injured in the incident, and that the man died instantly.
