Professional MMA fighter, 27-year-old Joe Torrez, was left with no choice but to put his martial arts skills to the test during a recent altercation with home invaders. According to police, Torrez was with his fiance, his son, and his fiance’s sister when four gang members forced their way into his mobile home in New Mexico. The altercation was the result of a heated argument he was involved with on New Year’s Day with one or more of the assailants.

The four men who broke into his home, Leonard Calvillo, brothers Sal and Raymond Garces, and Nathan Avalos are believed to be gang members. Torrez’s attorney for the case C.J. McElhinney, reported to the Sun-News that the attackers forced their way into his home with a “shank” and grabbed another knife upon entering. Witnesses to the argument that occurred prior to the break in allegedly heard Calvillo threaten “I’ll kill you and your family … I’ll go to your house.”

Torrez engaged the men and wound up stabbing and killing Sal Garces and beat Nathan Avalos badly enough that he had to be hospitalized. The other two assailants fled the scene but were later arrested and charged with conspiracy and property damage. Torrez faces potential charges for killing Sal, however his attorney has stated that he was only trying to defend his family. Torrez has since received loads of support on his Support Joe Torrez Facebook page against potential charges that he might face.

Torrez apparently holds a record of 1-5 according to Sherdog.com.
