A recent study conducted by the University of Madrid found that teenagers who prefer to stay up late are generally wealthier and brighter than early birds, The Independent reports.

Out of the 1000 teenagers researchers surveyed, those who burn the midnight oil most frequently exhibited a level of intelligence that usually earns people high powered jobs and rewarding salaries.

The team studied the daily habits and biological clocks of the participants in order to determine whether they usually stay up late or go to bed early and rise at the crack of dawn.

Their intelligence was measured by academic performance and problem-solving skills. Major fields of study were taken into account as well.

The night owls not only got better grades but also demonstrated a more advanced capacity for inductive and analytical reasoning. These are the abilities most commonly associated with innovation and high-income jobs.

Out of those who went to bed early, only those who also got up on the very early side achieved academic status similar to the night owls.

An almost identical study among U.S. Air Force recruits supports the university’s findings. According to The Telegraph, the results showed that the late risers were better at constructive thinking than early risers. Another study from the University of Southampton also found that night owls went on to receive better salaries than those who regularly go to bed early.

Famous night owls include President Obama, Charles Darwin, Keith Richards and Elvis Presley.

Famous people who went to bed at an unusually early time include Napoleon, Ernest Hemingway and George W. Bush, who once said that he is always in bed by 10 p.m.

Professor Jim Horne, of Loughborough University, said: “Evening types tend to be the more extrovert creative types, the poets, artists and inventors, while the morning types are the deducers, as often seen with civil servants and accountants.

“We have looked at morning and evening types and we found that personalities tended to be different. Evening types were more social, more people-oriented. They will probably be good at cryptic crosswords, while morning types go for the more logical ones.”
