The idea of biting into a Simba burger may not be appealing to your palate (or imagination), but lion burgers are here and causing an uproar. And not just burgers — $35 lion tacos were added to a menu in Florida recently.

But where is the meat — perfectly legal to sell and eat — actually coming from?

Not wild lions, reportedly, but from farmed big cats, often meaning animals from circuses, zoos and exotic pet owners who’ve dumped their massive kitties.

Critics worry that lion meat is so small a market that it doesn’t warrant proper inspection from the Food and Drug Administration, and there’s also the concern that the niche taste could grow, possibly endangering wild lions. Simba beware.
